While there is a lot of talk about this thing called "Global Warming," one issue that is largely over-looked is global deforestation.
It is estimated that at least one-third, and up to two-thirds, of the planet's vegetative cover is gone. Obviously, a huge part of this is due to our removal of it for houses, buildings and roads.
We hear a lot of concern about carbon dioxide emissions, yet, if the tree is nature's number one means of sequestering CO2, why is there so little attention give to them as a solution?
Planting trees on your property, and supporting or participating in programs that plant trees is of utmost importance for the health of the planet. The solution is simple, and easy to be a part of.
Says Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director, "Forests are natural and economically important ‘sinks’, sequestrating carbon from the atmosphere and locking it away in trunks and branches.
Economics cannot capture all the benefits forests provide — from the beauty and spiritual value of the old and cherished village tree, the much-loved and productive community woodland, to the vast monumental and mystical tropical rainforest. But we know these are important, too.
Globally, forest cover is at least one-third less than what it once was. It is time to reverse the trends, it is time to act."
